Dawan

I'm going to tell you about poaching. Poaching is bad because it is illegal to hunt the elephants. It's bad because people poach to get jewelry.

I am going to teach you about dangerous jobs elephants do. People let elephants pull the wood down from the trees. This hurts their trunks. Did you go to the cirucs? Some circus trainers whip and starve the elephants if they don't do the tricks. Some Asian elephants are forced to work. These are the dangerous jobs that elephants do.

Here are some things you should do to save elephants. People should stop poaching so elephants can live in safety and be happy. Stop buying ivory! All it is doing is killing elephants. I don't want that to happen. It's good that there are groups called pro-elephant groups because they save the best animals in the world. You can, too.

  1. Dawan,
What can I DO as a teacher at Excellence Charter School to help stop the killing of these elephants? Also, can you recommend any other good books about this topic (picture books)? Thanks for sharing what you know about this. I really love and appreciate ALL animals and am saddened to hear what is happening to elephants all over the world. Ms.Goodwin :)

  3. Dear Dawan,
I am very impressed by all of your knowledge about elephants and the terrible practice of poaching them. Getting the word out to people using your website is an effective way to teach others about these things. Because of your research, I feel like I know a lot more about poaching and feel ready to spread the word to save elephants from poaching.
    Thanks,
    Ms. Prefontaine

  4. Dear Dawan,

Thank you for the information about what happens to elephants in the circus. I am just shocked to hear that they are sometimes starved or beaten. I don't undserstand why that would happen! How could anyone do something so mean?

  5. Dawan,
My grandmother has ivory jewlery that she bought a long time ago. She still wears it sometimes. What should I say to her the next time I see her?

  6. Dawan,

I am very impressed by your informative write-up on Elephants and poaching. I think elephants are amazing creatures and do not need to be murdered senselessly. I would like to help out any way that I could. Do you know of any foundations I can donate to? Or are you considering doing a fundraiser for this cause?

    Keep me updated,
    Shelly:-)

  7. Dawan,

Your write-up about poaching is very interesting and enlightening. I was'nt aware that elephats were left for dead once the tusk were removed. Elephants are a species that has been around for hundreds of years and we need to continue to have them around. I will spread the word about the unfair treatment of elephants and will also look into pro-elephhant groups.
